THE Indo Canadian Socio Economic Association (ICSEA) is hosting the first International Day of Yoga in Vancouver on June 21 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Hillel House in UBC, 6145 Student Union Boulevard, Vancouver. The event aims to celebrate “Yoga – the invaluable gift of India’s ancient tradition,” to provide authentic information about yoga, Ayurveda and traditional / holistic systems of wellness from India to raise the awareness in mainstream Canadian society.
On December 11, 2014, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga. The declaration came after the call for the adoption of June 21 as International Day of Yoga (IDY) by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his address to the UN General Assembly on September 27, 2014, where he stated: “Yoga is an invaluable gift of India’s ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature.” More than 170 countries, including Canada, have supported this move. It had the “highest number of co-sponsors ever for any UNGA Resolution of such nature.”
The event will be attended by a large number of yoga enthusiasts, community leaders and prominent citizens from the Lower Mainland. The celebrations will include light refreshments, networking opportunities, keynote speakers and yoga sessions under the guidance of prominent yoga teachers from Lower Mainland.
This event is supported by the Indian Consulate General, the Overseas Friends of BJP (OFBJP), various community organisations, business leaders and local yoga schools.
