Man arrested after a series of random attacks in New Westminster

THURSDAY  UPDATE:

On January 20, police said Maclean had also been charged with one count of assault.

“We’re pleased that Crown counsel has had a chance to revisit this file and approve an additional assault charge against Mr. Maclean for allegedly grabbing the stroller and baby’s jacket,” said Sgt. Sanjay Kumar on Thursday.

ON January 14 at approximately 7:45 p.m., the New Westminster Police Department was called to the intersection of Sixth and Carnarvon streets for a report of a fight. The caller described a series of events including a man reaching for a baby in a stroller, a fight with the guardian of the child, and a fight with a driver after blocking traffic and punching a car. The suspect and the victims are not known to each other.

When police arrived, the suspect spat on the police officer who was taking him into custody.

Jamie Maclean, 46, of New Westminster has now been charged with one count of assaulting a police officer and one count of mischief.

“There were a number of people who saw these events unfold,” said Sgt. Sanjay Kumar on Tuesday. “Attacks like this can be an upsetting thing to witness, and we’d like those people to know there is support available.”
