NDP says it’s invested more in Surrey schools in 6 years than BC Liberals did in 16

THE NDP said on Monday that with the announcement of 575 new student spaces at Tamanawis Secondary and 450 at Guildford Park Secondary, it has invested more in building and expanding Surrey schools than the BC Liberals (now known as BC United) did in their entire 16 years in office.

“For 16 years, (BC United Leader) Kevin Falcon and his party chose not to invest in the schools that kids in Surrey needed as the community grew,” said Education Minister Rachna Singh. “Since 2017, the BC NDP has tripled the rate of investment in Surrey schools so our kids can get the best education possible.”

“Since September 2017, the NDP government has invested over $640 million in Surrey school expansions, land purchases, and new schools. Between 2001 and 2017, the BC Liberals invested just $540 million. That’s an average of $34 million annually from Falcon’s BC Liberals compared to $106 million from David Eby’s NDP. There are over 11,000 new student spaces built or underway, with more to come,” said the NDP.

“In fast-growing communities like Surrey, David Eby is taking action to build the schools we need,” said Singh. “But we can’t stop now. We need to keep investing to give our kids the safe, supportive classrooms they need.”
