OPPOSITION House Leader Mary Polak on Tuesday in a statement slammed Attorney General David Eby for “an assault on democracy.”
She said: “Mere days before David Eby will face a potential recall in his own riding, the NDP have killed debate on Bill 53, the Recall and Initiative Amendment Act. This comes before the Conflict of Interest Commissioner has issued a ruling on whether or not the Attorney General is in a conflict of interest.
“It is simply unacceptable to shut down debate to allow government to unilaterally ram through changes to election legislation. This is an assault on democracy and the ability of legislators to do our jobs.”
Polak added: “Bill 53 is a sham that places limits on citizens who wish to recall their MLAs, and is an attempt to protect the political ambitions of David Eby.
“We call on the NDP to do the right thing and allow the debate to continue.”
