Safe Surrey Coalition recognizes passing of Police Amendment Act, its profound impact on municipal policing

FORMER Surrey mayor Doug McCallum and Safe Surrey Coalition councillors Mandeep Nagra and Doug Elford on Thursday commended the provincial government’s landmark decision in passing the Police Amendment Act, highlighting the profound impact this bill will have on public safety in Surrey.

Nagra said: “We owe a profound debt of gratitude to Premier David Eby and Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth for their unwavering commitment to introducing and championing the Police Amendment Act. With the Bill’s royal assent this afternoon, it’s a monumental moment for Surrey as the Surrey Police Service (SPS) will stand as the official Police of Jurisdiction and primary police service in our city.”

Elford highlighted the transformative nature of the bill, saying: “This isn’t just about a change in uniform. This is about Surrey getting its dedicated urban police force with more boots on the ground, ensuring enhanced public safety and a more tailored approach to our unique community needs.”

Nagra, addressing the opposition from certain quarters, added: “The needless delays and resistance, particularly from Mayor Brenda Locke, have resulted in a staggering monthly loss of $8 million of taxpayer dollars. Given the impressive $150 million cash offer from the Province, it’s high time for Mayor Locke to prioritize public safety over personal differences.”

Elford, emphasizing the need for collective action, noted: “While the passing of this bill marks a significant stride in ensuring the safety of our residents, there’s work yet to be done. We strongly urge the provincial government to exercise its new authorities and remove Brenda Locke as chairperson on the SPS board. This will ensure transparency and efficiency, vital for the seamless transition from the RCMP to the SPS.”

McCallum said: “This landmark decision embodies the spirit of Surrey’s progression and our community’s aspiration for an empowered future and safe communities. As we transition into a new chapter of dedicated local urban policing, we fortify our promise to prioritize the security and prosperity of our beloved city.”

All members of the Safe Surrey Coalition said they are united in their call for collaboration and urged all stakeholders to work together to prioritize public safety above all else.
