Stolen debit card prompts pickpocketing warning from New Westminster Police

NEW Westminster Police are investigating after a resident had her stolen debit card used to make approximately $2,500 in withdrawals and purchases.

“Sadly, thieves are using a variety of tactics to prey upon some of our most vulnerable citizens,” said Sgt. Andrew Leaver on Monday. “Distraction tactics are common, as well as thieves appearing to be helpful and offering to assist someone with bags or luggage.”

New Westminster Police encourage all residents to keep money, cards and other valuables close to themselves and ensure their bag or purse is in front of their body. Be on guard if a stranger tries to point something out to you or distract you in any way.

If you find that you’ve been a victim of theft, report it to the New Westminster Police Department at 604-525-5411.
