Surrey Councillors condemn Mayor Locke’s ‘half-million dollar waste’ on partisan politics

“We must focus on real issues, not on political games that have already ended”

SURREY Councillors Mandeep Nagra and Doug Elford of the Safe Surrey Coalition on Monday denounced Mayor Brenda Locke for the misuse of $500,000 in taxpayer funds for what they call a “pointless political crusade” against the provincial government.

Nagra said: “It’s a grave misstep to use the taxpayer’s money for partisan politics. That half-million could have made a substantial impact in improving our city’s infrastructure and aiding our most vulnerable citizens.”

Elford echoed Nagra’s sentiments, emphasizing alternative uses for the funds. He pointed out: “This money could have been invested into community enhancements that benefit all residents of Surrey, like fixing potholes on our roads, bolstering parks and recreational spaces for seniors and families, or providing essential services to our homeless population bracing for the winter season.”

Both councillors criticized the mayor for continuing a fight over the transition to the Surrey Police Service despite the matter being settled by the provincial government.

“This isn’t governance, it’s a personal vendetta funded by public money,” said Elford. “We must focus on real issues, not on political games that have already ended.”

The councillors called for a shift in priorities back to the tangible needs of Surrey residents. “Mayor Locke must redirect her attention to managing the city’s needs rather than squandering resources on lost causes,” asserted Nagra.
