Calgary Police monitoring almost 350 offenders with ties to organized crime; 83 arrested and charged

CALGARY Police on Monday said they had responded to five shootings in the past four days throughout communities in the city.

“While it is still too early to determine the motivations of these shootings and whether they are connected, several have the hallmarks of organized crime. Despite these incidents being targeted, they continue to put Calgarians at risk,” police tweeted.

“As a police service, we are doing a significant amount of work to address organized crime related violence through a co-ordinated offender management approach.”

Through this approach, this year alone:

* Calgary Police are monitoring almost 350 offenders with ties to organized crime, and have arrested and charged 83 of them, some of them multiple times.

* They have seized 375 crime guns, including almost 90 firearms from organized crime offenders.

* Their Violent Crime Suppression Team has conducted walkthroughs of 2,840 establishments and 1,068 checks on offenders connected to organized crime to ensure they are abiding by court-ordered conditions.

Calgary Police said: “We have begun to see some positive impacts as a result of this work, but we still need support from the community.

“As Calgarians we can all help prevent organized crime related violence. As residents you know best what activity is out of the ordinary for your community. If you see something suspicious, please report it to police. If you have surveillance video of an incident, please share it with police.”
