Police investigate allegation of fraud at Coquitlam Little League baseball team

THE Coquitlam Little League baseball team is alleging that a substantial portion of team funds is missing and the Coquitlam RCMP have been called in to investigate.

Mounties first learned about the allegations on August 8. Last week, the file was transferred to the fraud specialists at the Coquitlam RCMP’s Economic Crime Unit.

“Fraud investigations are often complex, and it’s too early to start talking about details like the exact amount that is missing, but we have a good starting point and expect to make progress,” said Cpl. Jason Tran with Coquitlam RCMP’s Economic Crime Unit on Monday. “We will not be releasing the name of any suspect or suspects unless we reach a point where the BC Prosecution Service approves charges.”

If you have any information about this particular alleged fraud, contact the Coquitlam RCMP non-emergency number at 604-945-1550 and ask for the Economic Crime Unit (file 2020-21019).

“Even sports teams and charities need to be careful,” said Tran. “When large sums of money are at play, you need to make sure that checks and balances are in place.”
