Suspect arrested after breaking into occupied New Westminster residence

AT approximately 8:30 p.m. on September 24, New Westminster Police officers received a 9-1-1 call from a youth saying that someone had broken into their home and was now hiding under a table.

Officers rushed to the scene, and spoke to the youth that was in the home. The youth shared that he took a video of the suspect before scaring him away.

Thanks to the evidence the youth provided police, officers were able to identify the suspect and arrest him later that night.

“We want to commend this young person for their thoughtfulness and bravery,” said Sgt. Justine Thom, “Calling 9-1-1 and capturing video of the suspect were instrumental in allowing police to identify a suspect and make an arrest.”

James Wood, 63, of New Westminster has been charged with one count of breaking and entering with intent. At this time the suspect remains in custody.

The New Westminster Police Department said that it would like to take this opportunity to remind parents and guardians to talk to their children about the importance of knowing when and how to dial 9-1-1.
