Delta initiates preparation work at Mackie Park for new synthetic turf field

THE City of Delta, in collaboration with the Province of BC and the Delta School District, is finalizing plans to install a state-of-the-art synthetic turf field at Mackie Park. The new synthetic turf field will replace the gravel field behind Gray Elementary, making way for a second turf field at Mackie Park.

To prepare for construction of the new turf field, City crews will begin the process of removing trees currently occupying the designated field area. Starting on March 18, prior to the bird nesting season, 25 trees will be removed from the site. The removal of these trees will be undertaken in compliance with the Delta Tree Protection and Regulation Bylaw.

As part of Delta’s 2024-25 Urban Reforestation Program, 59 replacement trees will be planted in new locations to mitigate the impact of tree removal. The exact locations for these trees are still under consideration.

The new synthetic turf field will feature a full-size soccer pitch and high school-rules football field. Key components of the project include LED field lighting, perimeter fencing and walkway, and new field equipment.

“Delta’s synthetic turf field will be a place for everyone, young and old, to come together, be active, and feel more connected as a community,” said Anne Kang, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “My ministry is always looking to support local governments, through the Growing Community Fund, on projects like this that make our communities strong and healthy. This new turf field will be a safe and accessible gathering place for people in Delta for years to come.”

“The new turf field at Mackie Park will provide our user groups and sporting community with much needed infrastructure to meet the demand of athletes of all ages in our growing community. I’m grateful for the funding support from the Province, and this collaboration with the Delta School District ensures access to top-tier facilities in Delta,” said Delta Mayor George V. Harvie.

“We are excited to see the new turf field start to take shape and I know our students and their families are looking forward to being able to use the new field when it opens later this year,” said Val Windsor, Chair, Delta School District Board of Education.

This project is funded by the BC Growing Communities Fund, aimed at supporting BC municipalities and regional districts with funding that addresses the demands of infrastructure and amenities, including parks and recreation facilities.
