BETWEEN February 22 and March 23, Richmond RCMP have received six alleged robbery reports involving purse snatchings.

Four of the incidents took place in Central Richmond and two in the Steveston area. Fortunately, none of the victims — all women — were physically injured.

In five of the robberies, the suspect is described as male between 5’3 and 5’6 dressed in dark clothing and wearing a mask. There is insufficient evidence at this time to determine if these alleged crimes were committed by the same person; however, investigators from the Richmond RCMP General Investigation Section and frontline are working diligently to identify and arrest anyone involved.

“In recent weeks, Richmond has seen a troubling rise in purse snatching incidents. We urge every resident to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the police of jurisdiction. Awareness and prompt reporting are crucial in helping us address the issue effectively. We want to alert the public to the increase in these reported crimes and urge other victims to come forward,” said Inspector Michael Cohee, Officer-in-Charge of Richmond RCMP Investigative Services and Community Engagement.

Some safety tips include:

• Keep your head up, stay alert, and be aware of your surroundings;
• Take note of the people, businesses, and sources of assistance in the area;
• If a criminal is after your purse or other material items, throw the item one way while you run the other way;
• Details are critical. Take note of what the suspect looks like and their direction of travel. Physical descriptions such as height, weight, clothing, and visible markings like scars, tattoos, or piercings can help the police in later identifying the suspect. If a vehicle is involved, try to take notes describing the suspicious vehicle, license plate, and the stranger’s description;
• Call 9-1-1 as soon as it is safe to do so.
