No screening Padmaavat in 4 states, says major multiplex body

Mumbai (PTI): As violent protests against the release of film “Padmaavat” burgeoned, the Multiplex Association of India said today its members would not screen the period drama in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Goa.

The decision of the association, which represents about 75 per cent of the multiplex owners in the country, came as Rajput outfits and other fringe elements vandalised malls, burned vehicles, and issued open threats to theatre owners and public in their bid to stall its release, claiming distortion of history.

The film is slated for release tomorrow.

“We have decided not to play the film in four states Rajasthan, Gujarat, MP and Goa — as the local management has told us that the law and order situation is not conducive,” Deepak Asher, president of the association, told PTI.

“For us safety of patrons is important. Depending on the scenario, we will see if the atmosphere is safe, then we will play it (in these four states). Things could change (but) at the moment we are looking at safety of people,” he added.

Even in the states where the film would be released, private security guards would be deployed outside cinema halls besides police, he said.

The association members together account for for 1,800- 2,000 screens accross the country.

The Sanjay Leela Bhansali-directed “Padmaavat” is based on the saga of a 13th century battle between Maharaja Ratan Singh of Mewar and Sultan Alauddin Khilji.

A top official in Mumbai said police will provide adequate security to theatres wherever it is required.

“We are releasing the film almost everywhere, except few places where there is disturbance. We have 488 screens across India. In a few places the film won’t be shown due to possible threat (of violence),” said Rajender Singh, Chief Programing Officer, Inox.

He said Inox has been assured of protection by the local police stations at various places and that it has also stepped up in-house security. Singh said though advance booking was very encouraging, it was difficult to say how many people would turn up to see the film.

Nitin Datar, executive committee member, Cinema Owners and Exhibitors Association of India, said the organisation has asked its member exhibitors to contact the nearest police stations and seek protection.

“Police officials called us to find out where the film is releasing. They have assured police protection. Ultimately, it is the individual choice of the exhibitor (to screen or not), taking into consideration the risk, the damage that can be caused to the property. But more than that, exhibitors are worried about the security of patrons,” Datar said.

The association, with members in Gujarat, Goa, Maharashtra and parts of Karnataka, has over 500 theatres affiliated to it.

Manoj Desai, Executive Director of Gaiety, Galaxy and Maratha Mandir single-screen cinemas in Mumbai, said they have yet to get any security.

“We have not received any security yet, but we might get it till tomorrow morning. We are still waiting. It is the job of the authorities to provide us adequate security. If something happens to my property, I am even willing to sit in front of the CM’s house (to seek justice),” Desai said.

He said while 70 per cent of seats in the three cinema halls were booked, families were a little scared to watch thhe film. “There is excitement about the film. I hope law and order prevails and the film has a smooth release,” he said.

An exhibitor from Maharashtra, who did not wish to be named, said his chain of theatres is ready for the release.

“We will abide by the Supreme Court’s order and screen the film as we have got a fantastic advance booking. We have faith in the state government and the police,” he said.

Bhansali and the film’s lead actor Deepika Padukone have received death threats over the film.

A police jeep with half-a-dozen policemen was seen outside the entrance of Bhansali’s residence in suburban Andheri today. At the exit gate, four private security guards were spotted.

Inside the building, there were another 6-7 private security guards, making sure no stranger enters without permission and proper checking.

Two constables were stationed outside the multi-storey building in Prabhadevi in south Mumbai where Padukone lives, while another team was inside the premises.

Police sources said security will be provided to the actor round-the-clock until “the issue dies down”.

Heavy security was deployed last evening during a media screening of “Padmaavat” at a mall in Mumbai. Police sources said they will continue to remain stationed there “at least for the next two days”, and once the film is released, they will assess the situation.

Theatre owners in Gujarat today said the film will not be screened in any of the multiplexes or single-screen theatres in the state till the row is resolved. The Gujarat Multiplex Owners Association said the decision was taken for the safety of viewers as well as to avoid damage to theatres.

Prateik Babbar gets engaged to girlfriend Sanya Sagar

Mumbai: Actor Prateik Babbar and writer- director girlfriend Sanya Sagar are engaged.

The duo, who was dating since past one year, formalised their relationship at a ceremony at Sanya’s farmhouse in Lucknow.

The roka ceremony was attended by the couple’s immediate family members, including Prateik’s father Raj Babbar, his aunts (late mother Smita Patil’s sisters) and Sanya’s parents.

Prateik issued a statement, sharing the news of his engagement.

“I have always been a very guarded person when it involves my private life. Infact I went down on one knee and proposed to Sanya at Time Out 72 music festival in Goa in December and no one knew about it till she brought it up with her parents.

“Since my grandfather passed away last year, we wanted to keep the festivities low key and hence will plan the wedding only next year,” he said.

Calling the engagement the happiest day of his life, Prateik said Sanya has brought a lot of stability in his life.

“Yesterday (Monday) was the happiest day of my life as Sanya brings a lot of stability and fortune into my life and I am someone who has always endorsed the idea of wedlock and brood,” the actor said.

The couple has known each other for eight years now, but got together only in 2017 after Sanya returned from London in January having completed a year-long post-graduate course from Goldsmiths, University of London, with specialisation in filmmaking.

She has worked as a production assistant on the Danny Huston-starrer, “The Last Photograph”, and as a production runner on the Salma Hayek short, “11th Hour”.

Prateik is planning to hold separate functions in New Delhi, Lucknow and Mumbai post the nuptials in 2019.

On the professional front, the 31-year-old actor is set to return to the silver screen this year with two big ticket projects, Ahmed Khan’s “Baaghi 2”, co-starring Tiger Shroff and Disha Patani and Anubhav Sinha’s social thriller “Mulk” with Rishi Kapoor and Taapsee Pannu.

Ali Fazal, Kumail Nanjiani on cloud nine after Oscar nods

Mumbai (PTI): Actors Ali Fazal and Kumail Nanjiani are ecstatic as their films “Victoria & Abdul” and “The Big Sick” respectively scored nominations at the 90 Academy Awards.

The Fazal and Judi Dench-starrer bagged two nods in Best Costume Design, and Best Make-up and Hairstyling categories and the actor feels grateful for the recognition.

“And here’s to the @TheAcademy for nominating us for Costume Design and Hairstyling and Make up at the 90th oscars this year. It’s an absolute honour.

“And my heartiest congratulations to all the other nominees in all categories. Great year and great films to be rubbing shoulders with,” he wrote on Twitter alongside stills from the Stephen Frears-directed movie.

Nanjiani’s film received one but major nomination in the leagues for the Original Screenplay Oscar, which the actor co-wrote with his wife Emily V Gordon.

The Pakistani-American actor-stand-up comic, who also stars in the biographical film, said the Oscar nomination is surreal feeling for him and he would “never get over” it.

“Emily and I met when she heckled me at a comedy show in the back of a diner in 2006. We wrote a movie about it and 12 years later we’re nominated for an Oscar…” he tweeted.

He also praised “The Shape of Water” for scoring the highest (13) nominations at this year’s Oscars.

“Also, how cool is it that a Guillermo del Toro monster movie is the leader in Oscar nominations? The answer is very.

It’s very cool,” he wrote.

“Kobe Bryant and I have the same number of career Oscar nominations,” Nanjiani quipped.

Veteran actor Anupam Kher, who also stars in “The Big Sick”, took to social media saying he was proud to be a part of the film.

“Congratulations @emilyvgordon and @kumailn for the #OscarNominations for Best Original Screenplay for @TheBigSickMovie. So proud to be part of this gem of a film,” he wrote.

Kriti Sanon to walk for Tarun Tahiliani at LFW

Mumbai (PTI): Actor Kriti Sanon will turn Tarun Tahiliani’s showstopper at the upcoming Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2018.

The designer’s collection represents “a new voice of tradition” keeping in tone with the essence of his label.

Tahiliani’s inspiration continues from his couture collection which showcases spatial elements like the Milky Way, stars, constellations etc and carries forward his love for layering and weightless constructed garments

“It is time for some wonderful freshness in the fashion, glamour space. I had the good fortune to see Kriti in ‘Bareilly ki Barfi’, and I thought here’s real star power.

Beautiful, poised and the ability to play a small town Bareilly girl in drab salwar-kameez and yet be so incredibly full of spirit and life that you can’t keep your eyes off her, that is what star power is and at that moment I decided the new girl for Tarun Tahiliani is Kriti Sanon,” the designer said in a statement.

‘Padmaavat’ a film India can be proud of: Ranveer Singh

Mumbai (PTI): Amid widespread protests against “Padmaavat”, the film’s lead actor Ranveer Singh said today that he is proud to feature in a movie, the whole country can take pride in.

“Padmaavat”, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is set to release tomorrow but the controversies that sparked early last year when the film was in the making have not left it till date.

Ranveer, who will be essaying the character of Alauddin Khilji in the period drama opposite Deepika Padukone, who plays Queen Padmavati, took to Twitter to thank the praise coming his way, and said he is overwhelmed by “Padmaavat”.

“I saw ‘Padmaavat’ in 3D last night. I am so overwhelmed with the film at this point that words fail me. I feel immensely blessed.

“I am so proud of my team. Team ‘Padmaavat’ for the win! High tens and monster hugs to everyone. I am relieved and happy to the reactions to my performance. Thank you all for your kind and generous praise,” he tweeted.

The 32-year-old expressed his gratitude for Bhansali, saying he has shaped him into the artiste that he has become today.

“Sanjay sir has given me a gift of a character that I will forever be indebted to him for in my life, more than I already am. You have shaped me into the artiste that I am, sir. I love you.”

Without addressing the row surrounding the film, Ranveer requested people to give the film a chance, saying “Padmaavat” is something the country will be proud of.

“For me, the sheer toil of a film’s team has translated as magic on the big screen. And today on the eve of the release of a beloved film, I wish you all a Happy Republic Day in advance and invite you all to the cinema halls.

“I am proud to be a part of a film that our while country can be proud of. Jai Hind,” Ranveer wrote.

A school bus with children in it was attacked in Haryana, a fringe outfit in Uttar Pradesh declared a bounty on actor Deepika’s nose while roads were blocked at many places as violence spread to several states.

Amid widespread violent protests, led by Karni Sena, several theatre owners, including Rajasthan and Gujarat, have planned not to screen the Bhansali-helmed movie which also stars Shahid Kapoor playing a Rajpur warrior.

The fringe outfit’s chief patron Lokendra Singh Kalvi insisted that a ‘Janta curfew’ will be imposed on theatres that screen the movie.

Kalvi alleged that a dream sequence between the characters of Khilji and Rani Padmavati, which, he said, was “intolerable”.

The Supreme Court had earlier paved the way for its nationwide release after some states issued notifications banning the film. The movie, earlier titled “Padmavati” and slated for a December 1 release, will now hit theatres worldwide tomorrow.

Dr. Bonnie Henry will be first female provincial health officer in B.C.

Dr. Bonnie Henry

DEPUTY provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry has been appointed as the first woman in the role of provincial health officer (PHO). She will replace Dr. Perry Kendall, who will retire on January 31.

Dr. Henry is uniquely positioned to step into the role, with a career that includes tackling a wide variety of public-health concerns and challenges within Canada and abroad. These include supporting the STOP polio program in Pakistan in 2000; working with the World Health Organization on the Ebola outbreak in Uganda in 2001; and, as associate medical officer of health for the City of Toronto, leading the operational response to the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak in the city in 2003.

“Dr. Henry has hands-on experience in managing large-scale public-health issues both internationally and here in B.C.,” said Health Minister Adrian Dix. “She has a consistent approach with providing straightforward information to the public on the risks of Zika, or air quality, to controlling issues that affect families daily, like influenza. With Dr. Henry, we have a direct and experienced advisor to steer and improve public health in our province.”

Dr. Henry was appointed deputy provincial health officer in August 2014. In this role, she has guided the province through the worst wildfire season in decades, which affected air quality; guided the B.C. response to the West African Ebola outbreak, advised on the H7N9 bird flu in B.C., provided guidance on travelling in Zika-affected areas; and provided leadership on the overdose crisis.

She adds to the strong role Dr. Kendall developed in his time as PHO. His term has been called ‘legendary’ and he was a recipient of the Order of B.C. in 2005, marking his contributions to public health in B.C. He was prolific in writing reports on Indigenous Health, drinking water and other public-health issues, and managed a wide variety of concerns that included advising on the Ebola outbreak, radiation from Fukushima, SARS, and swine flu.

Together, Dr. Henry and Dr. Kendall are credited with earnestly working together to fight one of the deadliest challenges facing British Columbians today, the overdose crisis.

“Dr. Henry has been an incredibly strong support for me in my role as provincial health officer and filled in for me countless times when I was unavailable,” said Dr. Kendall. “I feel confident that Dr. Henry is the right person for this job. I have relied on her judgment and approach regularly during her time as deputy provincial health officer.”

Prior to taking on the deputy PHO role, Dr. Henry was the interim provincial executive medical director of the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) and held a variety of public-health positions with the BCCDC from 2005 onwards.

Dr. Henry graduated from Dalhousie University’s medical school and completed a master’s in public health as well as residency training in preventive medicine at the University of California and in community medicine at the University of Toronto.

The PHO is the senior public health official for B.C., and is responsible for monitoring the health of the population of the province and providing independent advice to the ministers and public officials on public-health issues that concern people in British Columbia. Health authorities also have medical health officers who have powers under the Public Health Act. Their responsibilities include advising on public health, including management and budgetary roles, providing evidence-based opinions and support to the provincial health officer.

Dr. Kendall, who has been the provincial health officer since 1999, officially steps down on January 31.

2018 Chrysler Pacifica and 2018 Ram 1500: Automobile Journalists Association of Canada Award Winners

Montreal – FCA Canada announced recently that the Canadian-made 2018 Chrysler Pacifica has been named Best Minivan and the 2018 Ram 1500 has been named Best Pickup Truck by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) in its annual Canadian Car and Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year awards program.

AJAC is a long-running and respected national association of automotive journalists who test drive and report on new vehicles in various media outlets across the country. The annual Car and Utility Vehicle of the Year Awards program is an integral part of the association, providing consumers with expert advice and data to inform their vehicle buying decision.

This year, AJAC’s annual Canadian Car and Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year voting process was notably different. For the first time, voting was expanded to include all vehicles available to Canadian buyers, not just the vehicles that are new to the market

Chrysler Pacifica overcame eight rivals to earn the Best Minivan crown. This is the second year in a row the Windsor, Ontario-made vehicle has won its AJAC category after being named Best New Large Utility in 2017. This was the first year the segment-exclusive Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid was eligible to compete. The industry’s first electrified minivan delivers 2.6 Le/100km (109MPGe) and a range of 53 km (33 miles) solely on zero-emissions electric power from a 16-kWh lithium ion (Li-ion) battery, as well as a 911-km total gas and electric range.

The Ram 1500 defeated six rivals for its Best Pickup title. The second best-selling vehicle in Canada in 2017, the current Ram 1500 is a seasoned competitor, boasting numerous segment-exclusive features, including a unique multilink coil spring rear suspension system with optional air suspension and RamBox bedside storage. Available in a long list of unique trim levels, the Ram 1500 has a full-size pickup for everyone.

Ram brand furthered its leadership earlier this week, too, with the debut of the all-new  2019 Ram 1500 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Both it and the current version of the Ram 1500 will be sold side-by-side in 2018.

The winner of each of AJAC’s 14 categories, including Chrysler Pacifica and Ram 1500, are now eligible to be named 2018 Canadian Car of the Year or 2018 Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year, with those overall titles announced at the Canadian International AutoShow in Toronto, February 15.

Going back to school is now more affordable thanks to Skills Boost

Patty Hajdu

PATTY Hajdu, federal Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour, on Wednesday launched Skills Boost, a new plan to give adult learners the support they need to succeed in the workforce.

Through a new $1,600-per-year Canada Student Grant and new flexibilities for Employment Insurance, going back to school will be within reach for 43,000 more Canadians in the middle class, as well as those working hard to join it.

Skills Boost includes several measures announced in Budget 2017 that will be available for the school year beginning this fall as part of a $287.2 million three-year pilot project. Students eligible for the Canada Student Grant for Full-Time Students and who have been out of high school for at least 10 years will receive an additional $1,600 per school year ($200 per month) in top-up funding.

An estimated 43,000 low- and middle-income Canadians will benefit from the top-up funding in the 2018–19 academic year. And, for the first time, working and unemployed Canadians whose employment situation has significantly changed from the previous year can see their current income used to assess Canada Student Grant eligibility. This means a person who experiences a drop in income won’t be unfairly automatically disqualified for assistance based on their previous year’s earnings.

Skills Boost also means expanded access to Canada Student Grants for part-time students and students with dependent children, to further break down financial barriers to post-secondary education. These measures are expected to benefit Canadian women in particular, who often strive to improve their career prospects while balancing family responsibilities. Women represent nearly two-thirds of the Canada Student Loans Program’s part-time recipients, while approximately four out of five students receiving the Canada Student Grant for students with dependent children are women.

Support is also coming this fall for Canadians who find themselves out of work and want to go back to school. Today, if an unemployed worker is receiving Employment Insurance (EI) benefits, they may lose their eligibility for those benefits if they return to school or undertake training, which interferes with their availability for work, without the necessary referral from designated authorities. Starting in fall 2018, an unemployed person will be able to go back to school to get the training they need to find a new job—without fear of losing the EI benefits she needs to pay rent and buy groceries.

Hajdu said: “As an adult learner myself, who went back to school as a single mom of two children, I know that adult learners can face challenges to pursuing post-secondary education—not only because of the cost of education itself but also because of the financial pressures and time constraints of supporting our families. Our government has Canadians covered, no matter their circumstance—whether they are going to college or university for the first time, returning to school or upgrading their skills.”

Quick Facts

* The pilot project top-up grant funding will be prorated based on the length of the study period. For example, those registered for an eight-month school year will receive $1,600, while those registered for a 12-month school year will receive $2,400. This funding will be provided on top of any other grants the student qualifies for.
* Using a working or newly unemployed Canadian’s current income rather than the previous year’s earnings means they could become eligible for income-tested Canada Student Grants, including up to $3,000 for the Canada Student Grant for Full-time Students as well as the top-up funding.
* To receive Canada Student Grants, students must apply to their province or territory of residence to receive financial assistance for the 2018–19 school year. For example, as of November 8, 2017, students in Ontario can start applying to the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) to receive both provincial and federal assistance for the 2018–19 academic year. Students who have already applied for OSAP will be eligible for this funding.
* The top-up funding is available to full-time students pursuing an undergraduate degree, certificate or diploma of at least two years in duration at a designated post-secondary institution who have been out of high school for at least 10 years.

Burnaby RCMP release video of suspect vehicle involved in pedestrian hit and run

ON Saturday, January 20 at 5.30 p.m., Burnaby RCMP responded to a report that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle in the 7200-block of Cariboo Road. The pedestrian was transported to hospital and suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrian failed to remain at the scene. Burnaby RCMP have obtained dashcam video which shows the suspect vehicle. As it is not yet possible to make out a vehicle licence plate, Burnaby RCMP said they were releasing a portion of the video in the hope that someone will come forward with information to help identify the driver or the vehicle.

The vehicle is believed to be a black Dodge Charger which may have damage to the front passenger side. Prior to the collision, the vehicle travelled northbound on Cariboo Road for over a minute. After the pedestrian was struck the vehicle continued north.

“This collision resulted in a man suffering serious injuries,” said Superintendent Chuck McDonald. “I am calling on anyone who has information relating to the identity of the driver to contact the Burnaby RCMP immediately.”

If you have any information or if you witnessed this collision, contact the Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999. Should you wish to remain anonymous, contact CrimeStoppers by phone at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or submit a tip online at www.solvecrime.ca.

Burnaby RCMP are asking all pedestrians, cyclists and drivers to remain alert in low light and wet weather conditions.

Drivers should look twice for pedestrians crossing the road, particularly when visibility is poor. They should give themselves extra time and space to stop in case a pedestrian suddenly crosses the street.

Pedestrians should make eye contact with drivers when crossing the street. Do not assume a driver has seen you and ensure vehicles are stopped before stepping out onto the roadway.

Human remains found in burnt-out vehicle near Trail those of Jordan Workman of Castlegar

THE RCMP Southeast District Major Crime Unit and Trail and Greater District RCMP on Tuesday announced that they have confirmed the identity of the human remains found in the trunk of a burnt-out vehicle left abandoned and ablaze on Highway 22 on Sunday, January 14 have been identified.

Following the completion of a forensic examination of the human remains, police said that in order to further the investigation, they are releasing the name of the dead person as 38-year-old Jordan Workman of Castlegar, B.C.

RCMP investigators in conjunction with the BC Coroners Service have also determined that Workman’s death was a homicide.

“The current findings indicate that this incident involves a targeted victim and does not reflect any increased safety risks to the public,” said Cpl. Dan Moskaluk.

Shortly after 9 p.m. on January 14, the Trail and Greater Regional Fire Department responded to a report of a vehicle fire just outside the Genelle Flats on the southbound shoulder of Highway 22, approximately 11 km north of Trail, B.C. RCMP investigators also attended the scene. The discovery caused a closure of the highway to permit investigators to process the scene on Sunday. Given the circumstances, the Southeast District Major Crime Unit took conduct of the investigation.

The burned vehicle was described as 1999 Honda Civic, 4 door sedan, grey in colour (similar to that shown in the photos).

Police continue to seek public assistance with this investigation. Members of the public with information are asked to call the Trail and Greater District RCMP Detachment at 250-364-2566. Anyone wishing to provide information anonymously can do so by calling Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or leave a tip online at www.bccrimestoppers.com.
