SFU’s Jasmine Rai is one of 50 students in Canada to receive a Schulich scholarship

NEW student Jasmine Rai of Simon Fraser University is one of 50 recipients of the prestigious Schulich Leader Scholarships, awarded annually to high school graduates enrolling in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) undergraduate program at participating universities in Canada and Israel, SFU announced on Thursday.

(The names of the recipients of the scholarship were first announced in June).

Rai, a graduate of Princess Margaret Secondary School in Surrey, receives $80,000. She begins her studies at SFU this September. Rai is pursuing a bachelor of science with a joint major in computer science as well as molecular biology and biochemistry. She was selected for her outstanding academic and extra-curricular achievements, which are core requirements for the scholarship.

Rai says: “The Schulich Leader Scholarship will continue to open many doors for me as I can continue to explore my interests and pursue my passion without any worries of financial burden. As a recipient of this prestigious award, I am excited to have this opportunity to be a part of this vast network of young innovators. I hope to channel my passion for STEM to create opportunities for the betterment of society.”

Upon graduation from Princess Margaret Rai, who also boasts a perfect 4.00 grade point average, has earned multiple academic awards in mathematics, science and language arts. Outside of the classroom, she volunteered countless hours as a peer tutor at her school as well as tutoring young neighbourhood children in STEM-related courses.

SCHULICH Leader Scholarships are prestigious entrance scholarships awarded to high school graduates enrolling in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) undergraduate program at participating universities in Canada and Israel. Recognizing the increasing importance and impact that STEM disciplines will have on the prosperity of future generations, businessman and philanthropist Seymour Schulich established this $100 million scholarship fund in 2011 to encourage our best and brightest students to become the next pioneers of global scientific research and innovation.

This program awards 100 scholarships annually, valued at more than $7 million. High schools across the country put forth more than 1,300 Schulich Leader Nominees who were vying for 50 Canadian scholarships. Schulich Leaders can devote their full time and attention to their studies, as all of their financial needs are covered over the course of their degree. Canada’s highest potential students are winning these scholarships and will make remarkable contributions to society.

BC home sales robust and unchanged in August

THE British Columbia Real Estate Association (BCREA) reports that a total of 9,162 residential unit sales were recorded by the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) in August, an increase of 2.4 per cent from the same period last year.

Total sales dollar volume was $6.2 billion, up 22 per cent from August 2016. The average MLS residential price in the province was $678,186, a 19.1 per cent increase from August 2016.

“BC home sales in August remained unchanged from July, on a seasonally adjusted basis,” said Cameron Muir, BCREA Chief Economist. “Strong economic conditions are underpinning demand. However, rising home prices combined with upward pressure on mortgage interest rates is expected to temper demand over the balance of the year.”

Year-to-date, BC residential sales dollar volume was down 15.9 per cent to $51.8 billion, when compared with the same period in 2016. Residential unit sales declined 15.0 per cent to 73,267 units, while the average MLS residential price was down 1.1 per cent to $706,839.

Vancouver Whitecaps FC 3, Minnesota United FC 0: ‘Caps jump into top of Western Conference with big 3-0 win over Minnesota

VANCOUVER: Vancouver Whitecaps FC (13W-9L-5D jumped into the top spot in the Western Conference, leapfrogging rivals Portland Timbers and Seattle Sounders FC, with a convincing 3-0 win over Minnesota United FC (7W-15L-5D) on Wednesday night at BC Place.

Yordy Reyna and Brek Shea led the way for Vancouver on this night, each recording a goal and an assist. Budweiser Man of the Match Erik Hurtado also had a fine outing, scoring his second goal of the season and leading the line with another workmanlike performance.

It was another positive performance from a red-hot Whitecaps FC side who have now won three straight matches during a five-match unbeaten run.

The ‘Caps are also 6W-2L-2D in their last 10 outings.

Whitecaps FC head coach Carl Robinson made five changes to his starting lineup after Saturday’s 3-2 win over Real Salt Lake, inserting left back Marcel de Jong, midfielder Russell Teibert, wingers Alphonso Davies and Shea, and Hurtado up front.

It was a team designed to counter – and that’s exactly what they did.

Minnesota controlled 60 per cent of possession in the first half, but Vancouver was the far more dangerous side. Reyna opened the scoring in the fifth minute with a deft touch and finish after a perfect diagonal ball in behind from de Jong.

Then, in the 31st minute, Hurtado finished off a clinical ‘Caps counter, chesting in a fine cross from Shea at the near post.

The result was never in question from there. Only the final score.

The ‘Caps had a flurry of chances in the second half, forcing Loons goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth into a few fine saves. They eventually added an insurance marker in the 88th minute through Shea, who headed in a cross from substitute Fredy Montero to add an exclamation mark on the night.

Next up for Vancouver is a tilt with former Whitecaps FC winger/forward Kekuta Manneh and his Columbus Crew SC on Saturday afternoon at BC Place (4 p.m. PT on TSN 2 – tickets still available). The Whitecaps FC Legends & Stars charity alumni match  in support of BC Children’s Hospital, featuring alumni from all eras of the club’s 40+ year history and cast from popular TV series Once Upon a Time and Riverdale, will take place prior to the MLS fixture.

NDP always planned to kill Massey Bridge: BC Liberals

BC Liberals say that an internal party document makes clear that despite protestations to the contrary from Transportation Minister Claire Trevena, the BC NDP has long-planned to kill the Massey Tunnel.
“The minister has been trying to pretend the government is not leaving more than 80,000 commuters stranded in gridlock traffic twice a day,” says Delta South MLA Ian Paton. “Now we have proof the NDP has been deliberately misleading British Columbians. The document is clear: ‘We’ll pay for this instead of replacing the Massey Tunnel – even if it is a safety risk.’
“It’s so frustrating that the minister is doing a ‘consultation dance’ when they have no such intentions. Instead, she’s throwing five years of work and any hope those commuters have of a quick trip into the garbage bin.”
Earlier this month, Trevena announced plans to kill the Massey Bridge and admitted that would come at a cost of $100 million. At the time, she suggested the government would consult on a future replacement.
“This document illustrates the NDP have no plans to fix the worst bottleneck in British Columbia,” says Richmond-Queensborough MLA Jas Johal. “These are people trying to get to work, kids to hockey practice and workers trying to move goods. And Claire Trevena has just told them – sorry, don’t expect anything anytime soon.”
The replacement bridge would save rush hour commuters up to 30 minutes, be seismically safe and move goods worth $25 billion a year more efficiently, say the Liberals.

Priyanka Chopra meets Syrian refugees in Jordan

Cairo (PTI): Actor Priyanka Chopra, on her maiden visit to a Syrian refugee camp in the Jordanian capital of Amman, is appalled by their plight and said the world should be inspired by their resilience.

More than 5 million people have fled war-torn Syria since the civil war began in 2011 and have taken shelter in neighbouring countries like Lebanon, Iraq, Egypt, Turkey as well as Jordan.

Priyanka, who is the Unicef global goodwill ambassador, has been documenting her visit to Amman, which hosts 1,80,000 Syrian refugees, on Instagram. She shared her interactions with refugee kids, who are desperately seeking normalcy in their lives.

Priyanka Chopra, a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, greets a Syrian womand and her baby at UNICEF’s Makani Center in Amman, Jordan, on Sunday, Sep. 10, 2017.

“Today was very emotional. As we go about our daily privileged lives, it’s hard to imagine that everything can be taken from you in an moment. Today we spent the day in a host community meeting Syrian refugee families (like this one) so desperately seeking a safe place of normalcy for their families,” the actor posted on the photo-sharing website, along side a short video of her playing with kids from a refugee Syrian family.

Priyanka, 35, shared that more than 80 per cent of the Syrian refugees in Jordan live outside refugee camps in cities, urban centers and farming villages (host communities.)

“Amman hosts the largest number of Syrian refugees, about 1,80,000 people. Refugee families in host communities have limited livelihood opportunities, and after 6 years, have depleted their savings and borrowed money from everywhere to feed and support their families. @unicef #ChildrenUprooted #TheyAreUs,” she further wrote.

In a previous post, Priyanka explained her decision to share the plight of Syrian refugees, especially kids, saying she wanted the world to be inspired by their resilience and their hope for a better tomorrow.

“I have never done this when I do field trips, but on this one I feel compelled to reflect on what I feel after every session because I felt a lot. The anger and agony I felt seeing these beautiful hopeful children ravaged by war was so raw.

“The world has seen the pain war has left in Syria but the resilience and joy and hope in spite of it is so inspiring to me. These kids are my inspiration. They should be yours too,” she said.

Kangana baring her soul, don’t see it as publicity: Mehta

Mumbai (PTI): His directorial venture ‘Simran’ has been mired in controversies, be it the fight over writing credits or the focus on leading lady Kangana Ranaut’s personal life, but director Hansal Mehta says the actor is not doing anything for publicity.

Recently Kangana appeared on the show “Aap Ki Adalat” and talked about her alleged relationship with Hrithik, Aditya Pancholi and Adhyayan Suman.

Mehta, however, is not bothered by the focus on Kangana as he believes she is not someone to back out when asked about her life.

In an interview with PTI, the director says, “Why every time she is on a public platform one asks her about her personal life? She is not somebody who will back out from speaking about anything that is asked to her. She bares her soul… (I) don’t see it as publicity.

“She is an individual who needs to be respected for being fiercely independent in the choices that she makes. I am not sad (for the film). The film is special and it will remain that way.”

Kangana-Hrithik’s alleged love story has turned out to be one of the dirtiest squabbles, with both of them slapping legal notices to each other last year.

In May this year, writer Apurva Asrani had slammed Kangana for discrediting his work when she claimed that she developed the story from a one-line script.

In the film’s first poster, Kangana was credited as the ‘additional story and dialogue writer’ with her name appearing before Apurva’s. It was later rectified with the producer calling it a printing mistake.

When asked if he is upset that his film has been sidelined due to controversies, Mehta says, “I don’t think so.

When the film will be out, it will speak for itself.”

Mehta says every actor has a different style of working and he supports it as the aim is to eventually make a better film.

“Every actor has a process and as a director your job is to aid that process and create an environment that blossoms to its fullest. My job is to help them in their process.”

“Simran” revolves around a Gujarati housemaid in the US, who somehow ends up as a criminal.

“It is a character that Kangana is playing (a robber).

And this character is lovable. And even if she is doing any crime, you feel concerned for her.

“It is a human story and crime is never justified. There should be redemption towards the end. It is a journey and crime is just a part of the journey”.

The film is set to release on September 15.

My role in Sriram Raghavan’s next will shock people: Ayushmann

Mumbai (PTI): After playing relatable “good boy” roles in several films, Ayushmann Khurrana is thrilled about his next project with filmmaker Sriram Raghavan, which he says, will “shock” the audience.

The yet-to-be-titled thriller will reportedly feature Ayushmann as a blind concert pianist.

The actor says he has never really done films of diverse genres before, and is therefore excited about this one.

“I am glad I’ve taken my time. I have dabbled two different characters but I haven’t dabbled two genres. My films have been medium budget ones, set in small towns about middle class family where I play relatable good boy characters.

“I don’t want to change myself with every film. Let me settle for this and then I’ll do a makeover so that it should be a shocker for people. So as a character, this will definitely shock people,” Ayushmann tells PTI.

Though the actor is tight-lipped about the film, he confirms it is not titled “Shoot The Piano Player” as was being reported.

This is the first time Ayushmann is collaborating with Raghavan, who has previously given memorable crime-thrillers, such as “Ek Hasina Thi”, “Johnny Gaddaar” and “Badlapur”.

Ayushmann, who has featured in films like “Vicky Donor”, “Dum Laga Ke Haisha”, “Barailey Ki Barfi” and “Shubh Mangal Saavdhan”, says he is drawn to realistic stories due to his upbringing.

The 32-year-old says more than Hollywood, he grew up watching Bollywood movies and his struggling days helped him connect with the masses more.

“I know songs from the ’50s and ’60s, I can tell you the names of the lyricists also. I am proud of knowing films of my country. That keeps me real.

“I love doing films which are real, relatable because I come from a theatre background, I travelled everywhere with my group and interacted with the masses. Then I joined radio which has a direct connect and I think that connect translated into films.”

I have played Haseena to the best of my ability: Shraddha

Mumbai (PTI): Shraddha Kapoor will be seen playing Haseena Parkar in the upcoming biopic and the actor says she has tried her best to do justice to the role.

The 30-year-old actor says as a team they have stayed true to the story of Dawood Ibrahim’s sister.

In an interview with PTI, Shraddha says, “I loved the story. It’s a real life character, who has suffered so much loss in her life. The film was challenging for me. And I have played the role of Haseena to the best of my ability.

“My approach towards doing this film was the same as any other film, it is based on the vision of the director and we have tried to stay true to the story and the character.”

The actor says she knew nothing about Haseena before coming onboard the project and director Apoorva Lakhia’s research helped her a lot.

“I knew nothing about her. From family members you get personal anecdotes, how the person is in real life, the personality traits. The insight from her (Haseena’s) family was valuable to try and understand how she needs to be portrayed on the big screen.

“Apoorva Lakhia had met her, spent time with her. He had the opportunity to meet her and understand her. Unfortunately, I could not (meet her) as she had passed away. Apoorva knew her character so well and it helped us a lot while doing the scenes.”

Shraddha says they are not passing any judgements in the film and acquired “holistic” approach in presenting Haseena’s life story on the silver screen.

“We have portrayed a holistic view of this lady, we have shown the angle of law, her own perspective and of other people, who she has encountered. Apoorva did all the research.

The audience is free to make their own judgement.”

The film will chronicle the journey of Haseena from teenage to the time when she was 40-year-old.

The actor says her endeavour was to get as close to Haseena as possible in terms of look.

“I tried my best to gain weight and I managed to gain seven-eight kilos. We took help of prosthetics to make me look like Haseena Parkar. I have tried to imbibe her mannerisms and the way she speaks, walks etc. It is entirely my voice, we have not doctored it.”

The film will see Shraddha’s actor brother Siddhanth Kapoor portray the role of Dawood Ibrahim. “Haseena Parkar” is set to release on September 22.

BC Liberals table first bill on campaign finance reform

Andrew Wilkinson

BC Liberal MLA Andrew Wilkinson on Wednesday introduced a comprehensive bill to reform campaign finance that could be passed this week and bring the needed reforms into effect immediately, the BC Liberal Party announced.
“The new government is saying they’re having problems in preparing a bill for introduction, even though they said it would be the first bill they brought in,” said Wilkinson, who serves as justice critic. “I am pleased to be able to help them with the introduction of this bill. As the NDP used to say, ‘we can pass it in a day’ and bring these reforms – which all sides of the chamber agree on – into effect now.”
The proposals in this bill would set annual contribution limits, require “real-time” disclosure of donations, and ensure greater transparency and accountability of political parties and candidates to the public.

The bill includes the following:

* A ban on corporate and union donations, including donations in kind, to political parties, their candidates and constituency associations.
* A ban on foreign donations, with the requirement that only individuals residing in British Columbia and who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents are eligible to donate.
* A maximum annual contribution limit of $2,500 for individuals to any one political party, and up to $2,500 to a party’s candidates and constituency associations (for a total allowable annual limit of $5,000 per year).
* Loans and guarantees to political parties and candidates must be only by a Canadian chartered bank or credit union at a fair rate of interest.
“The NDP and Greens had the opportunity to pass legislation in June that would have prevented the Premier from having cash-for-access events on golf courses, in ballrooms and most recently private dinners with convicted criminals,” said Wilkinson. “Here’s another chance for the Greens to show they are willing to stand up for a principle they claim to believe in, that campaign promises do matter. I hope all parties will join us in passing this bill and getting the reforms in place now.”

GREEN Party Leader Andrew Weaver, reacting to the BC Liberals’ move, said: “After B.C. was internationally derided as the wild west of politics due to our lack of campaign finance laws, I am delighted that we finally have all-party agreement on the need for reform.

“I am also encouraged by our good-faith consultations with the government and by the Attorney General’s statement today that the legislation resulting from our consultations will be tabled next week.

“Now that there is a government that has the confidence of the house, the B.C. Green caucus looks forward to genuine, productive debate in good faith on this crucial issue so that we can finally get big money out of B.C. politics.”
