Man involved in carjacking shot dead by Nainamo RCMP

A man who was allegedly involved in a violent carjacking was shot dead on Tuesday by Nanaimo RCMP.

The Island District Emergency Response Team were assisting Nanaimo RCMP with effecting an arrest of a male at the BC Ferry Departure Bay terminal in relation to a violent carjacking incident from another area of the province, according to the RCMP.

The vehicle was stopped by police and a takedown was initiated as the male disembarked from the ferry. The male exited the vehicle, with what police believed was a firearm, and shots were fired resulting in the male sustaining serious injuries. He later succumbed to his injuries.

Neither the officers nor any other members of the public were injured.

The RCMP said the scene and any evidence have been secured while the Independent
Investigation Office of BC have been notified. IIO BC will assume conduct of the investigation into the police-involved shooting to see if there is any link between police actions and the male’s injuries.

Police said that as the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, they will not be releasing any further information.

Anyone who witnessed this incident is asked to contact the IIO BC at 1-855-446-8477.

  1. Let me get this straight. The RCMP shot the guy multi times and they are investigating to see if there is any link between the police action and the guys injuries??? This must be Canada as nowhere else could be this stupid.

    • “IIO BC will assume conduct of the investigation into the police-involved shooting to see if there is any link between police actions and the male’s injuries.” The IIO is NOT the RCMP.

  2. Note: committing a crime on an island is probably crime 101. Unless it travels on water good luck getting it to mainland.
