Man convicted in 2019 hit-and-run that left two police officers with life-altering injuries

A 34-year-old man has been found guilty of four charges stemming from a hit-and-run in 2019 that left two police officers with life-altering injuries.

On March 4, 2019, just before noon, an RCMP officer and Abbotsford Police officer on duty with the Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Service were seriously injured in a hit-and-run that occurred in the 5000-block of North Fraser Way in South Burnaby.

Burnaby RCMP’s Criminal Collision Investigation Team assumed primary conduct of the investigation.

On May 26, 2022, charges were approved against Jason Kirupakaran.

On January 11, 2024, Kirupakaran was found guilty on the following charges:

  • Criminal negligence causing bodily harm (two counts)
  • Fail to stop causing bodily harm (two counts)

“While this does not take away the pain and suffering these injured officers continue to experience, we hope this development will provide some measure of comfort as they continue to focus on their ongoing recovery and healing,” said Chief Superintendent Graham de la Gorgendiere, Burnaby RCMP’s Officer In Charge.

“I’d also like to acknowledge all of the teams and police officers who worked tirelessly throughout this lengthy and comprehensive investigation.”
